What looks like a surreal optical illusion is really two powerful wave systems colliding at sharp angles, twisting the surface into a grid. From shore, it feels calm enough to touch, almost inviting. But beneath that pretty pattern, currents tug in conflicting directions, waves slam unexpectedly, and the water’s rhythm becomes hard to predict. Swimmers can be pulled off balance, surfers misjudge takeoffs, and small boats lurch uncomfortably as crossing swells fight for control.
The safest response is brutally simple: don’t go in. If you see a clear checkerboard on the sea, stay on solid ground, well back from rocks, jetties, and wet ledges. Watch the show, take your photos, and respect local warnings and lifeguards. The ocean can be both breathtaking and unforgiving in the same moment. When it starts to look like a giant chessboard, that’s your cue to be smart enough not to play.
